400 MMBtu/hr biomass gasifier
Customer: Buckeye Technologies, Inc.
Project Location:Perry, Florida
The Challenge
Buckeye, a producer of value-added cellulose-based specialty products has a commitment to sustainability and have set goals to increase energy efficiency and leverage the use of carbon-neutral biomass to supply their internal energy needs, and where possible, sell “green” energy to the public. Buckeye has begun planning for the installation of a 400 MMBtu/hr biomass gasifier to enable the reduction of approximately 250,000 barrels of oil per year. The gasifier to be located on the mill site in Perry, Florida will also enable the mill to sell green power to the grid.
The Solution
Harris Group developed an appropriations-grade scope and cost estimate (-10%/+20%) for the project, incorporating information from the gasifier process provider and site-specific details. The preliminary design included complete integration of the new equipment into an existing pulp mill, including utilities integration as well as waste heat recovery. Harris Group also provided preliminary design for the balance of plant (BOP) outside the scope of the gasifier process provider. BOP equipment included biomass handling (reclaim, screening, hogging, conveying), biomass drying, dryer furnace, emissions control equipment, biomass storage, package boiler and producer gas burner and multi-fuel lime kiln burner.
Other services included:
• Evaluation and assessment of biomass drying technology providers, including facility visits and operation audits.
• Review of state air emissions limits and impacts on project.
• Performed preliminary BACT (best available technology) analysis.
• Assessment and optimization of emissions control equipment.
• Development of optimal feedstock properties.
• Feasibility of bio char combustion.
The Benefits
Harris Group worked closely with the customer, and together, provided a project that:
• Included a complete scope that met the owner’s requirements
• Generated a complete and accurate capital cost estimate ensuring sound project planning
• Adhered to a high standard of quality, both in design and construction
• Met all applicable laws and regulations
• Met bank financing requirements
