Water/Wastewater Treatment
A resort town along the Washington coast had a unique problem. They wanted to build a new Wastewater Treatment facility and originally were required by the DOE to build a pipeline two miles out to sea for discharging plant effluent. Studies showed that such a pipeline would be washed away in one season. Consequently, the DOE allowed a much shorter pipeline but also required that the effluent only be discharged during a period thirty minutes after high tide, and one hour before low tide, thus preventing the remixing (reflux) of effluent and insuring that it was channeled out to sea and not back into the harbor.
A SCADA solution was developed containing twenty-years-worth of tide tables and programmed to download a new year's worth of data on midnight of each New Year. The resulting control program has been running for years and is considered very robust.
