Large Paper Roll Conveyor Upgrade
McKinley Paper | Port Angeles, WA

Project Overview
Harris Group provided comprehensive structural engineering and construction support to the conveyor transporting rolls between the Paper Machine Building and the storage facility over a public road. This enhanced our client’s paper roll handling system, supporting increased production capacity from 5,000 lbs. to nearly 9,000 lbs. per roll.

Project Highlights
Resized Rolls: Accommodated larger rolls (60" diameter, 110" long, weighing up to 9,000 lbs.).
Conveyor Replacement: Replaced existing belt conveyor with a robust slat-type conveyor to handle the increased size and weight.
Structural Support: Designed new steel supporting the conveyor between the Paper Machine Building and the storage facility, including a steel-framed trussed bridge spanning a public road to connect to the Roll Storage Warehouse.
Foundations: Evaluated existing equipment, designed new foundations, and prepared support structures for the upgraded conveyor and transfer systems, including the lowerator/upender.
Project Coordination: Managed permit acquisition, reviewed shop drawings, and provided construction support through RFIs, ensuring a smooth upgrade to increase production capacity.
This project ensured reliable handling of larger paper rolls, supporting our client’s increased manufacturing volume.
