Semiconductor Fab to Photovoltaic Cell Production
Confidential Client | Colorado Springs, CO

Project Overview
Harris Group delivered comprehensive design services for a new 2GW photovoltaic manufacturing campus in Colorado Springs, Colorado. This project involved the strategic retrofit of an existing 600,000 square foot, multi-level semiconductor fabrication facility to accommodate specialized solar cell production processes.
Our design services encompassed critical infrastructure upgrades including:
Advanced HVAC and process exhaust systems tailored to solar manufacturing requirements
Chemical process piping and systems engineered to support fabrication processes
New electrical equipment integration throughout the facility
Comprehensive Facility Monitoring and Control Systems (FMCS) and Life Safety Systems (LSS)

Structural Engineering
The structural design phase included thorough analysis of existing structural systems and the design of new mezzanines and platforms to support additional equipment requirements. Our team ensured all modifications maintained structural integrity while accommodating new manufacturing processes.
Code Compliance & Safety
The project required a change in occupancy classification to support new chemical process locations. Our code analysis included:
Investigation of hazardous chemicals and gases for bulk storage requirements
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis
Hazardous Materials Inventory Statement (HMIS) support
Hazardous Materials Management Plan (HMMP) support

Environmental & Safety Management
Harris Group managed several critical compliance processes:
Air and water permitting procedures
Acoustic modeling for effective noise abatement
Facilitation of the Hazard and Operability (HAZOPS) study
Electrical & Control Systems
Our electrical engineering team designed:
Medium voltage substation specification and planning
Low voltage distribution systems
Emergency power solutions
The integrated Life Safety System (LSS) design included fire protection specifications. The Facility Monitoring and Control System (FMCS) design leveraged Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) technology, enabling decentralized monitoring and control capabilities across the entire campus.
