V-Fin & Rudder Paint Building

Boeing | Charleston, SC

Project Overview

Harris Group delivered comprehensive civil, structural, architectural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical design for Boeing’s new V-Fin & Rudder Paint Building, supporting 787 production. The project encompassed a 51,010-square-foot facility featuring specialized spaces such as paint booths, prep areas, and support rooms, all designed to meet stringent aerospace standards and codes. The design permitted efficient site improvements, utility systems, fire suppression, and security to facilitate Boeing’s manufacturing requirements.

Highlights

Key project highlights included detailed permitting for erosion, stormwater, and utility services, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations. The building's structural systems incorporated reinforced concrete slabs, steel framing, and seismic and wind load considerations to withstand demanding aerospace environments. Sophisticated HVAC and process systems were specified for paint booths, prep areas, and support facilities, integrating automation controls and safety interlocks. Utility systems, including electrical, fire protection, and communications infrastructure, were engineered to meet rigorous safety and operational standards.

Outcomes

The project resulted in a fully permitted, code-compliant aerospace manufacturing facility tailored to Boeing’s specifications. It enhanced production capabilities with high-performance environmental controls, safety systems, and robust structural design. Harris Group’s comprehensive engineering facilitated a seamless construction process, supporting Boeing’s timeline and operational needs for the 787 program’s critical production requirements.
